I’ve been at home with the kids and one thing that I wanted to do with them was bake. Valentine’s day is less than a week away so I thought why not make something to celebrate. To be honest, when I came across this recipe, it wasn’t the ingredients that caught my attention, but the decorations.
I have used one other recipe to make donuts but they weren’t from scratch and they weren’t cake donuts. This recipe didn’t call for a lot of ingredients for the donuts and did not take long to make either. This is definitely one that you can make with your kids. They’ll love decorating them afterwards. Spencer decorated these.
The icing can be a bit sweet. Spencer and I had a donut without the icing and loved it just as much; although, we had many with the icing too.
Happy Love Day! I would love to hear if you try this recipe.
Valentine's Day Donuts
Ingredients
- Ingredients:
- Nonstick spray (I used olive oil spray)
- 2 cups flour
- 1 tsp. baking powder
- 1/2 tsp. salt
- 1/4 cup butter, melted
- 3/4 cup sugar
- 2 eggs
- 2 tsp. vanilla
- 2/3 cup milk
Directions
- Preheat to 325, spray donut pan with nonstick spray and wipe off excess.
- Mix flour, baking powder, and salt in small bowl.
- Beat butter and sugar on medium high until fully combined.
- Add eggs, mixing for 30 seconds in between each addition.
- Add vanilla. Turn off mixer and scrape down sides. Mix on high for 15-20 seconds.
- Turn mixer to low. Add 1/3 of flour mixture. Add 1/2 milk. Repeat, ending with flour.
- Transfer donut batter to pastry bag fitted with a round piping tip. Pipe batter into pan, leaving a 1/4” of room.
- Bake for 8-10 minutes, or until they spring back when gently touched. Let rest for 5-7 min, remove from pan.
- Makes approximately 1 dozen donuts.
To Make the Icing:
Ingredients
- 2 cups powdered sugar
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- 1 pinch salt
- 2-4 tbsp. milk, divided
- extract flavoring of your choice (optional) food coloring (optional)
Directions
- Mix powdered sugar, vanilla extract, salt, flavoring (1/4 tsp.), and 2 tbsp. milk in medium bowl. Add milk, 1 tbsp. at time until glaze is the consistency you desire.
- Separate glaze into three bowls and add food coloring to create the pink and red glazes.
- Place a cooling rack on top of a baking sheet.
- Dip one cooled donut into the glaze then remove and place on rack.
- Decorate.
Note: It’s best to add the sprinkles and decorations when the glaze is still sticky. However, if you want to add frosting lines on top, wait until the glaze has fully dried. If the glaze becomes too thick when dipping the donuts, warm it in the microwave for 5-10 seconds.
